In May 2019, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) hosted a workshop in the Ukraine titled “ICT Infrastructure as a Basis for Digital Economy.” The workshop provided an opportunity for 120 individuals from seven European countries to discuss issues on topics related to 5G and spectrum policy, broadband connectivity, technical aspects of 5G, Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, and cybersecurity. The Outcome Report of the Workshop for Europe and CIS on ICT Infrastructure as a Basis for Digital Economy highlights the discussions that took place at the workshop and the final outcome. Participants discussed ICT infrastructure as a basis for digital transformation; the legislative, normative, and regulatory environment necessary to enable 4G/5G network implementation and development; spectrum requirements and 5G pilot project case studies; application technologies of the near future, including IoT, machine learning, robotics, blockchain, and cybersecurity challenges. Participants ended the workshop with more enthusiasm and optimism for future collaborations and discussions on capacity building within communication networks.
